Three years ago I thought I had found the answer to my prayers in Propecia. I started taking it in the earliest stages of my hair loss and it stopped me from losing hair and helped fill in my crown. Suddenly, this year I began to lose hair like crazy and have so far lost about one inch of my frontal hairline. It was as if I had stopped taking it, but I didn't. Has this happened to anyone else? Merck says 90% of Propecia users who have taken it as long as I have retained their hair count, but I'm suspicious - either that or very unlucky.

That happened to me a few years ago; it all grows back + more. Member12969 said: Three years ago I thought I had found the answer to my prayers in Propecia. That happened to me and I hasn't regrown yet. Did you experience any hyper-andro side effects at this time (acne on shoulder/back, oily face/scalp)? Do the remaining hairs seem thinner? No, I haven't experienced any of the symptoms you mentioned, but yes the remaining hair seemed thinner. I'm using Nisim shampoo for thickening, but my hair line still seems to be receding. How long have you been on Propecia for?

Re: Propecia worked for 3 years, now shedding

Been on propecia for about 3 1/2 years. Went way downhill at almost exactly the 3 year mark. I'vs had DHT test (294 pg/ml range 120 - 550). Could be lowered, but this test was after lowering my dose to .5 mg/day. Took a couple week break then resumed at 0.5 mg/day for 2 weeks, now back at 1 mg/day. I'm going to give this a couple of weeks, looking for any hyper-andro symptoms. If any show up, I'm going to take a 1-2 month break. It really sucks not knowing if this stuff is actually hurting my hair at this point. - Fred

I too have been frustrated with proscar. Originally, my thoughts were to take the pill to pre-empt my recceding hariline, which in hine sight, was at a slow rate. Today will be exactly six months on the pill and I feel it has accelerated my frontal hair loss considerably. I'm assuming the cause is from the hyper-adro reaction (really oily forehead) that you mention. As of last night, I have been considering stopping the use of proscar but worried, having read past posts on this problem, that I have passed some sort of "point of no return" and that I will be worse off. There was only one post that I have read that discontinuing the use has resulted in some hairs growing back...the rest had negative results and were back on the pill. Starting to regret my decision on being proactive with my hairloss...

Let me know your progress. Thanks!

Re: Propecia worked for 3 years, now shedding

hey, have you read the 5 year study on finastiride (propecia/proscar)? It shows that those on placebo were much more prone to hair loss and those on finastiride in most cases maintained their hair and or regrew their hair. I think that if you give it some more time your hair will come back, or stay as it is. You must remember, Finastiride only blocks approx. 66% of DHT in your body. That leaves 34% that is still their, which over time can build up and slowly cause hair loss and thinning. I just started useing propecia two months ago, where before i was using just minoxidil (during which time i continued to lose hair). Now with the combination of minoxidil and finastiride I am seeing significant regrowth. However I must say that you guys are really scaring me. Let me just get it straight, are you saying that if you have a good set of hair, not to use propecia? That it will make it worse? If so, please explain your reasoning, i am very curious. Thank you.
