Two weeks ago I started applying Dr. Lee's minoxidil. I only apply it once a day, alternating between the plain 5% minoxidil and 5% minoxidil with Retin A. I thought I'd only apply it once a day until my scalp became adjusted to it and the irritation went away. But so far, my scalp is still itchy and feels a little irritated.

Can anyone else comment as to how long it took before their scalp irritation went away when beginning minoxidil application?

Thanks.

Re: How long does scalp irritation continue when beginning minoxidil?

I have been using Dr. Lee's formula for over 3 months and the itching and irritation have not gone away, especially after using the Xandrox 12.5% or 5% + retin-A. The regular Xandrox 5% does not irritate my scalp as much. I think there are shampoos you can use that will help this problem. I'll let you know if I find out anything.

The itching drives me nuts too, even as I speak I'm scratching like crazy. If I don't wash my hair everyday (I forgot today) it does this. I use Nizoral and a generic form of head + shoulders, you could also use T-gel to combat the itch. However, if you are like me you have to wash it every day.

Rogaine caused the same problem with me so i discontinued use and my problem will not go away, the doctor called it seborreah dermatitis and said there is no cure. I believe rogaine caused this so be attentive to your situation. It may not happen at first but afer prolonged usage WATCH OUT. Ill never touch the stuff again it only worsens my situation. Try aloe vera 99 percent and selsun blue medicated. apply the aloe vera three times a day This should help JP said: Two weeks ago I started applying Dr. Lee's minoxidil. Thanks. I was using rogain for a year before my hair started itching, what I want to know is the itching being caused by the rogain or hair loss. Because hairloss and itching scalp usley gohand in hand.

Re: How long does scalp irritation continue when beginning minoxidil?

I've been using 5% minoxidil for 2 years with No scalp irritation. I started alternating it with minoxidil with retinoic acid and my scalp became irritated after a few days. Dr. Lee's web-site suggests that when starting the retin-A compound to only use it once a week and slowly increase usage to decrease the problem of scalp irritation. Also, apparently some people may react to one of the other compounds in the minoxidil mixture (propylene glycol I think) and may get irritation from that. Dr. Lee has a mixture without that compound that may be helpful to you. Visit his website at www.minoxidil.com. There is a lot of useful info there.

minoxidil5% is the same as Regaine Extra Strength. There are no differences in composition or quality because Kirkland Minoxidil 5% is actually manufactured by Pfizer, the same company that makes Regaine.

I guess the problem is Retin-A not Minoxidil. JP you do know that Retin-A is a very strong chemical peel? For some, anything more than 2x a week is too much. If I used that shit every day my head would be a bloody mess.

It's great for wounding though.

(I haven't read through the entire thread, cause I'm in a rush, so sorry if I missed something)

A very common reason for itching when using minoxidil is allergy to propylene glycol (the stuff that minoxidil is usually mixed with). I think only about 0.1% are allergic to minixidil itself. As many as 10% have some sort of reaction to propylene glycol. Dr Lee has some products that use glycerin instead of propylene glycol, which is much easier on the skin for most people. I don't know if you're using those, but otherwise you could give it a shot. The products are marked "w/o propylene glycol" or "with glycerin" I think.

Also, you could try emu oil to soothe the scalp.

/p
