I'm a man over 60 with BHP (enlarged prostate). Sorry guys especially you younger guys; it's one more thing to look forward to as we age. A large percentage of us anyway. All of this info. is on the web available to all. I'm not a medical professional; just a regular guy doing some research for my own benefit. If you are thinking of taking a finasteride or dutasteride orally for hair loss here are a few things that may be of interest. After doing a bit of research on the web I presented what little I had learned to my primary care physician and he prescribed 5mg tabs of finasteride which I break in half so I'm taking 2.5mg per day. I've had no problems with the finasteride at all. But I'm writing this to alert others to some side effects of oral finasteride and dutasteride. Both of these medications inhibit conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone. Dutasteride is a dual inhibitor of type 1 and 2 isoenzymes where finasteride inhibits the type 2 isoenzyme. My doctor told me that one of his patients experienced testicular pain after starting oral 5mg finasteride. Stopped the medication and testicular pain stopped. My web research on dutasteride .5mg, turned up a reaction of musculoskeletal pain. Some very severe that required pain medication. If a negative reaction to finasteride occurs, the medication will clear in a few days. However, if a negative reaction to dutasteride occurs it may take over a month to clear.
