i have read avodart inhibits 90% of type 2 alpha reductase which is the culprit who converts into DHT, while propecia inhibits only around 71/72%. Basically avodart is a strong version of propecia and kind of a reinforcer, but hasn't been approved by the FDA for hair loss.

Harlan88 - Avodart inhibits the type I and II 5-AR enzyme, and as you mentioned does a much better job than Propecia in reducing DHT in the blood. The problem with doing this are sexual side effects, which are stronger with Avodart. Or at least, that's what others have reported. Another problem with Avodart is its long half life. It takes up to 30 days for the body to completely clear it, so if you are unfortunate enough to experience sides, you will have to wait up to a month to find relief. I was wondering how affective it is in stopping the loss, thickening existing hair and possibly growing back hair that has recently (12 months) shed. Many believe that stopping or controlling MPB is not as simple as reducing DHT. Inflammation, poor circulation, hormonal imbalances, insulin resistance and even poor digestion all seem to contribute to this problem. What I have been wondering for the last couple of years, is it possible that Propecia may actually be increasing the loss by forcing my body to up regulate dht sensitivity at the follicle receptor site? Are you taking either Propecia or Avodart, and if so for how long, and what have you experienced? DHT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihydrotestosterone
Thanks – John

I've been taking propecia for 10 months and have virtually no side effects. I totally agree that DHT is not the only culprit causing hair loss. I'm trying to do some research connecting a toxic liver to hair loss. When the liver is blocked up with toxins and hormones, it can't properly dispose of them. So maybe with our diets, environmental factors, alcohol, prescription pills(maybe even propecia) are all contributing some way to clogging up our liver which is leading to excess hormones in the blood like DHT? not sure just an idea I had.

I've only been on Adovart for a month now, twice a week, so I have nothing to report yet except that I feel no different than when I was taking Proscar every day.

Harlan88 - I'm glad to hear that you are not experiencing sides. I never did when I first started, but that changed over the last couple of years. I agree with you regarding the liver and specifically alcohol. I have noticed a decline in my hair after drinking on the weekends. I tend to shed more and grow less. It's been tough, but I have decided to stop drinking for six months to see if my hair improves.
Gimme Poontang - Any negative sides?

Nope -- so far no negative sides from taking Adovart twice a week.
