Saw Palmetto instead of Finasteride Saw palmetto is an herbal product used in the treatment of symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia. The active component is found in the fruit of the American dwarf palm tree. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of saw palmetto in reducing symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Saw palmetto appears to have efficacy similar to that of medications like finasteride, but it is better tolerated and less expensive. There are no known drug interactions with saw palmetto, and reported side effects are minor and rare. No data on its long-term usage are available. The herbal product also has been used to treat chronic prostatitis, but currently there is no evidence of its efficacy. (Am Fam Physician 2003;67:1281-3. I use the Saw Palmetto extract standardized to contain 85 to 95% fatty acids with active sterols. 2 160mg's a day. My doctor said it's not a problem.

In my experience it had a very negative effect on libido. I never used propecia but I assume it would be similiar in that respect. I'd be careful with it.

I once took standardized Saw Palmetto. It's many years since then so I honestly can't say if this was directly because of Saw Palmetto BUT my sex driver plunged to 0. I would have to take it again and see if this really was the reason. And maybe I will just for the heck of it. Another think I've noticed back then was that I had much less oily skin. Again not sure if Saw Palmetto was the reason. After NY I'm gonna order some Saw Palmetto and put this issue to the rest.

Does stinging nettle have the same effect as saw palmetto. I mean, does it screw with your hormones and libido the same way? i've had this bottle of stinging nettle for months, but haven't bothered trying it yet (since trying to get my hormones in balance to get rid of my acne once and for all).

i do take saw palmetto 20 drops in warm water once a day and my libido is WoW great no different. it inhibits the DHT from inside so i will give it a try for 3 months to see what the hell will happen.
