Done with Minoxidil (need advice please)

After about 3 weeks of using the stuff, I've come to the conclusion that it just doesn't work. I'm loosing as much, if not more hair then before I started, and have a constantly itchy scalp.

Only question is, what should I do now? Has anyone who has not responded to minoxidil seen results with other products e.i. propecia? thanks

Hold on. You're WAY too early in the line of treatment to abandon minoxidil. Let's examine your problems:

1. If you are suffering from an itchy scalp, then you are probably reacting to the solvent, not the minoxidil. Many forms of minox contain propylene glycol which many people (including me) find intolerable. Get a version of minox that is glycol-free. (There are many versions on the net, check out www.minoxidil.com for one.)

2. If you are losing more hair than you started, that is actually a GOOD sign. Telogen effluvium (the technical term for losing hair after a treatment has initiated) means that the minox has activated many of your hairs in rest phase (telogen) and they are pushing out the old hair in preparation for new growth (anogen). Don't worry about that. Get another brand of minox, and then take it for at least 6-12 months to assess the ultimate effect.

3. Adding Propecia to the minox regimen is the next step, but you've got to be more patient and persistent with the treatment to make any of this work.

I "concur" with Dr. Ronlev

Any treatment takes time...at least 3 months... to see if it's working...try rogaine foam before you give up on minox.

dude, treatment can take up to 10 months to 15 months, im on the 8th month with heaps of shedding and still have heaps of hope.

It takes time on some people, people that get results on the 4 month are just the right people that minox works on.

i was on 4 ml over the whole top of head and back (kirkland) and 1mg fin.

I agree with giving it at LEAST three-six months to work, and if you're still losing hair then give it up. But I DON'T agree with the statement that losing more hair is a "good" sign... For me,Rogaine actually seemed to speed up my hairloss -- I gave it a year and lost a LOT of hair while using it. Then I got on Proecia when it came out and it's worked great for me for over eight years now.

Same thing happened with me on Minox. I couldn't last 6 months with an itchy greasy scalp to see if I would respond. I was definitely losing more hair and didnt want to be applying twice a day forever...Propecia halted my hair loss and is more easier to administer. I've had friends who noticed a shed when they switched to Proscar, needless to say they switched back to Propecia as they were affraid of further loss.

Drop that greasy Minox.

I recommend you use rogaine foam, it will help with the itch. As far as staying on the minox, if you lose a lot of hair immediately after starting it, it will probably not work for you. If you start losing more hair a month or so into your treatment, your most likely going to be someone who responds to it and will regrow hair a few months down the road.

hi sublime,

Did you check you hair after the treamments?

What i did with mine is cut some of the top and put it into a jar and compard my 8 month treatment hair to the old stuff.

Funny my hair is worse now than when i started im on the 8th month and shedding but the hair that i cut of the other day is thicker than i started with so im assuming it should be good after the regrowth.
