Rogaine making things WORSE?

Im 24 and have been on rogaine for only a few months now. I noticed a little thinning around my vertex about six months ago and wanted to head off any kind of balding. I have noticed since using Rogaine that the thinning seems to be getting worse. Then I came across this review from a certain popular site.

"I used this product for 12 months and I don't like writing bad reviews, but this deserves attention. My hair was thinning slightly and I was concerned because I was not ready to step into the middle ages early (33). The commercials for this product said, "it is never too early to start using Rogaine". Well, I will tell you the truth. If you have thinning hair, but it is still strong and grows longer the 1/2", then you have hair better than Rogaine hair. Here is what I and nearly every other person I know had happen. First, when you start taking Rogaine, your natural hair will start to fall out. This is normal as the new Rogaine hair will take it place as noted in package. What is not noted is this hair is peach fuzz, never growing longer than 1/2 - 3/4". This hair does not style and is usually lighter than your normal hair, thus drawing more attention to an area you just rather not draw attention to. Think that is bad, that is not even the worst part. As the topical solution covers more of your scalp than the target area, eventually your good hair around the vortex starts to fall out and thin out. Also, Rogaine only works for so long (48 months I think - read fine print in package). Once you stop, your peach fuzz starts to fall out and you are amazed at how your bald spot has grown. Some of your old natural hair grows back, but not as much as you started with, especially if you were to progress that far anyway. In summary, learn to live with the thinning as Rogaine is not a solution. See a doctor - they will tell you the same thing. Some day there will be a cure that does not have an affect you your blood pressure or heart. Remember all the news articles in the early 90's about the risk of Monoxidil? That sure is not printed in the Rogaine package. I rank this product up there with miracle weight loss pills. They pry on a man's desire to have better hair, but delivers results far below a users intentions. The results are embarassing and draw more attention than balding naturally."

Frankly I was horrified after reading this, and am now extremely paranoid that I may actually be making things worse by using Rogaine. I know this is just some guys review, so I figured I would ask if anyone else has heard similar stories, and whether or not I should discontinue using Rogaine immediately. Thanks for your adice in advance.

You need to put things into perspective here. There have been millions of people using Minoxidil ever since it came out in the 90's there are going to be people who don't respond to the treatment. The person who made the post did not read all the directions that comes with every box of Minoxidil that is bought over the counter. Minoxidil will cause temporary shedding, because that is the way the product works it causes the DHT damaged hair to fall out and in its place a newer thicker hair will most likely grow. I say most likely because Minoxidil does not regrow hair for 100% of the people that use the product.

The other more important fact that was overlooked by this person is that with Minoxidil you should see results, whether it be through a slowing of hair loss, maintenance of hair or through regrowth, after 4 months of use. If by that time you don't see any of the above then using the treatment further would not serve much of any value to the person, and the product would most likely still cause the person to shed without any of the regrowth benefits.

Take everything you read in these forums and others with a grain of salt and try and look at the big picture with all treatments. You will find a decent amount of people out there who did not have great results using proven treatments, just remember that there are a lot more people out there fighting hair loss with those same treatments who have nothing but good things to say about those same products. You have to use the treatments for yourself to see where you fall. Keep in mind that a majority of people using the proven treatments have either maintained, slowed down or regrown their hairlines, by doing nothing you can be sure that your hair loss will continue.

That, in a nutshell is my problem. Im in the very beginning faces of hairloss. My whole purpose of using Rogaine was to slow or stop the hairloss on my vertex. But after hearing that Rogaine actually makes the stong hair fall out in exchange for the weak "Rogaine" hair, Im not so sure if this is right for me. The last thing I want is for the thinning to give way to full on bald spots because Rogaine is shedding my hair in exchange for some peach fuzz.

Well cyclone my hair problem started on the vertax too...till it then got to the top back of my head i hade no problem with the frontal hair until maby now..but the thing is im glad i found propecia because since ive bin on it now for one mounth ive seing resualts as the vertax gets filled up with new hair, now im only 19 and i have hair but its thin...and i dont want to loose more then ive loost the past years...

and if i dont have to deal with that messy rogaine then i would be glad to leave it..but im afraid once u start rogaine u have to keep going with it its like a drug, haha how ironic in a sick way,

but anyways im still not sure what too do! my doctor told me to quit rogaine but why be stupid and take a risk that u might get a big time shreddin and never get that hair back? while it could be that if i get some posetive resualts with propecia that rogaine messes that up

what i really need to know is someone who could tell me what exactly rogaine does and how it effects the hair! is there any study of people that have bin on rogaine + propecia? i mean if rogaine makes the hair that is effected by DHT to fall out would it be that nessery to use it when propecia halts the DHT to the scalp? i mean it might not halt all DHT but some, but still i don know what to do

sorry but this hair problem has F**KED UP MY LIFE I HATE IT! and once u want to deal with it it takes F***IN time to work and i can't take it no more! i just want to find a solution that works now! nobody derservs this! nobody should feel and have problems like hair loss! and i hate people who dousent have that problem cuz they don't know how it feels to have it! and its fully cool for them to makes jokes about it! sorry but i just hade to let that sh*t out! ive bin feelin so depressed for a so long time now!

I have posted the same question on a different hairloss forum, and have gotten some pretty good feedback there also. Not sure if the rules on this forum permit me to link, but here ya go.

I agree kidicarus, it seems to be that way with every hairloss treatment.
