Avodart vs. Propecia--

Using Proscar, the higher-dose version of Propecia, I have had an identical experience as you had--it simply would not stop hairloss, it only slowed the rate of loss.

I switched to Avodart as soon as it was launched and found that it was much more effective: it not only stopped hairloss completely, but also restored a significant amount of previously lost hair at the vertex.

This enhanced effectiveness does come with a significant side effect, however. In my case, Avodard reduced ejaculatory volume by about 75%. (But erectile function is not affected.) All things considered, I am willing to tolerate this, given the impressive results.

RonLev, are you taking 0.5 mg. a day? Did you get any shedding from the Avodart when you first started it?

I know there's a cost effective way to take fin (proscar or generic 5mg broken into 1.25mg chunks) is there a similar method of taking avodart? I'm a college student just trying to stop hairloss. Regrowth isn't even an issue.

I'm not sure if I had shedding caused by Propecia when I first started it. I was losing a lot of hair before I went on Propecia and I continued to lose a lot of hair for the first 6 or 7 months on the drug. I just thought the Propecia wasn't working but now I think it may have been causing the shed. I did finally stop losing my hair and I feel that the Propecia has helped me keep most of it. I'm still not sure if the Propecia made me shed for longer than I would have normally or if it was just a continuation of the shedding I was experiencing before starting Propecia. I am glad I stayed on Propecia though.

Is erectile dysfunction a common side effect of Propecia? I really care about my hair loss, but kinda hesitate to start taking Propecia because of side effects, and its life long condition under the propecia... What treatments have less side effects?? What do you guys recommend? Did anyone concern about hair implant?

Erectile dysfunction isn't a common side effect. Most people don't have any problem and the ones who do go back to how they were before after stopping the drug. I have been on it for 5 years(since I was 19) and I have had no side effects at all. It's one of the best treatments for MPB available and I would recemmend it if you are serious about treating your hair loss.

Real avodart, on the United Pharmacies website goes for $ 122.50 for a one months supply. As a student, I simply can not afford that. I am trying the generic version for 30 bucks a month. IVE HEARD that guys who are on the Dr. Reddy or Cipla version say that it works just the same. They also sell this to guys with prostate problems, so my guess is it does the same work--I HOPE.

Yes, I'm taking the standard dose, 0.5 mg qd. I did get a little shedding in the first month. My impression at that time was that this was the result of Avodart being more potent than Proscar, since shedding is often an early sign of effectiveness in getting hair follicles to enter anogen. In the post-shed period I experienced excellent regrowth. (In other cases, shedding can be a sign of scalp irritation, so don't take that as a universally positive indicator.)
