finesteride blocks 5ar in your scalp tissue, not your system. It doesn't travel to such and such gland and cause it to secrete sew and sew, and it doesn't cross the blood-brain barrier causing the release of anything. It SLOWLY builds up in scalp and prostate tissue. If you could rub it directly on your prostate, it would FASTLY build up in prostate tissue because it absorbs in tissues super easy. Doctor or not, he is incorrect. My doctor(a good doctor, in fact) thinks that proscar is a testoserone blocker!

Don't know if Dr. Proctor is right or wrong. Just putting his input into the mix.

As far as Finasteride blocking 5 alpha reductase in the scalp tissue goes, I reiterate, the primary type found in the scalp dermis is type 1. Finsateride only blocks type 2!

Without research studies to support your assertions it's nothing but conjecture based on theory!

Good point. Here's a study from the American Association of Clinical Endocrinoligists (study of hormonal systems) indicating topical finasteride worked for women WITHOUT systemic side effects. (All board members of this organization are medical doctors.)

Old Baldy:

Thanks for the info. However, the study has nothing whatsoever to do with the use of topical Finasteride on men for MPB. So, I don't see the relevance!

The women in the study had excessive facial growth. That is caused by a "bad" reaction to DHT.

For women, that is the same as our scalp follicles having a bad reaction to DHT. (in reverse order so to speak.)

Women are very sensitive to fin. They are told not to handle pills, (broken pills while pregnant really) because they metabolize it well.

For topical fin. to reverse facial growth in women, without changing their hormone levels, tells me alot. It says women can handle topical fin.

It worked to reduce facial hair but did not create problems with their hormonal system.

Men and women have very similar physiological systems. Just "reverse" the sequence of events and it isn't hard to imagine that a man's hormonal system might not change very much using fin. topically versus orally. That could help alot of men who have problems taking fin. orally.

So, topical fin. is another "weapon" for our arsenals. It's a bonus for men who can tolerate oral fin. because it attacks DHT. Maybe if you viewed it as an "insurance policy" it would make more sense.

For those that can't handle oral fin., it can apparently do FAR more that just add an insurance policy because it's a way for them to possibly USE fin.

Hello all, new member b_b here. I just discovered this somewhat elderly thread today, and allow me to say, "Wow!", you guys rock with all the info you have provided on topical finasteride! I was just wondering if anybody had any updates to what was last posted here? I turned 49 in March '07 and I've noticed hair thinning in the top/front of my scalp over the past couple of years. I'd like to believe that some effective topical treatment is available without going the (internal) propecia route. Anything out there new since these posts? I'd even consider making my own topical propecia if I knew the appropriate ratios. Thanks again for all the info you've all posted! ~Banastre

I did not know that either but this is just more evidence he should have been gone a long time ago.
