Question: I've been useing propecia for about 6 years (i'm 40). It has done a pretty good job of keeping what hair I had, plus adding some; not much in terms of side effects. However, I'm at a point where I'd like to stop, but I'd rather not experience rapid loss (i.e., an abrupt change of appearance). I have gone off of it a few times for 3 or 4 months and have experienced a decent amount of loss. This reversed, for the most part, as soon as I went back on. My question is, can one wean oneself off of this product, say over a year or so? That is, reduce the dosage so it won't be as abrupt a change?

If you quit using fin - then obviously you'll lose whatever gain you experienced thanks to the fin.

For those of you experiencing the sides, and for those of you thinking about weaning off . . . be informed that .2 mg finastideride (1/5th of a 1mg propecia tab or 1/25th of a 5mg proscar tab) is said to be only slighltly less effective than a full 5mg proscar tab as far as helping maintain your hair.

So, if you're taking 1.25 mg proscar per day or 1 mg propecia per day - at least feel free to cut back that dose back to every other day.  The fin and the dht fighing abilities stay in your system for a few days - so every other day is totally fine.

see http://www.actionlove.com/ for more information on your concern.

2 things with propeicia:

1. keep an eye on your dht levels, make sure they don't keep droping and droping. if it drops below 30ng/dl (according to the above website site) you might have a very hard time getting erections.

2. i've recently read in a journal a new concern about propecia...many scientist feel it lowers sperm counts. if you don't have a family yet, talk to your doctor about this. having a family is much more imprtant than having hair. so look into this angle and be 100% assured of it's safety.

what country are u from (propepcia, proscar, saw palmetto)

Member18854 , what country are u from?

u mention some very interesting things. any ideas where i can find concrete information on the concerns u have about propecia?

my dermatologist recommened i take propecia a year and half ago but i never did...i don't trust pharmecutical companies for the most part, and i just couldn't believe that a drug like propecia couldn't have any significant side effects.

i'm glad i never took it...although i wondered many times after that if i had made the right decision. besides...propecia is same as proscar. and saw palmetto suppose to give the same results as proscar (although for the prostate) so why not just use saw palmetto instead? any ideas on this 18854?

<> thank you

reduction in semen with propecia

dht-is-evil,

reduction in semen is a known side effect of propecia. and now there is talk that it could lower the sperm count as well.

---- as for dht being evil...as with most hormones, its not a matter of being good or evil, it's a matter of having not too much on the one hand and not too little on the other. i don't believe u can have erections with out dht...if i understand it correctly.

I already mentioned this in a different thread I think, but I also had a major reduction in semen after just 3 months of usage. By a major reduction, I mean I was "shooting blanks" for almost 2 weeks! This was obviously very disturbing (and kind of painful) so I immediately stopped. I had also lost most of my sex drive and was having testicular pain for the last month. I've never had any side effects with any medication and I have no allergies, so I feel that a medicine that would have this profound an effect on my body is obviously not safe. I'm worried what the effects might be on many people after years of usage, although I'm sure there could just be isolated negative examples like me.
