Hair Loss Trials for Avodart Put on Hold

sawaya1.jpg (5782 bytes)Glaxo Wellcome has cancelled its hairloss trials for its new medication, GI198745, also known as dutasteride / Avodart.  Saturday, November 27 on the Bald Truth radio show, Dr. Marty Sawaya, a participant in Glaxo's hairloss trials, said Glaxo had ordered the trials stopped indefinitely.  According to Dr. Sawaya, the results from the Phase II (small scale human studies) for hairloss were more encouraging than the early trials for Propecia.  The Phase III (large scale human trials) were originally set to begin in October, were then pushed back to January of 2000, and then discontinued a week ago.  The doctor was not able to provide a reason on the show.  At this time it is unknown whether Glaxo will still be pursuing the drug for prostate treatment.  If it is still approved for prostate treatment, hairloss suffers will still be able to get it and use it.  Regrowth will be attempting to find more about this situation and will release more information as it becomes available.
